Dean Lewis comes from that magical musical land on the other side of the world. From the unforgettable smash hits of INXS, The Bee Gees, and AC/DC (the real thunder from down under), to the new vanguard of musical luminaries like Courtney Barnett and Tame Impala, Australia has given the world an endless array of incredible music. We couldn’t be happier to welcome another amazing Aussie artist to the ranks of the greats, and he’s just getting started!
Hailing from the beaches of Sydney, singer/songwriter Dean Lewis recently released his debut feature length album, A Place We Knew, to rave reviews. He’s already racked up more accolades than you could shake a stick at, and his singes Waves and Be Alright have been certified platinum many times over, charting in countries all over the globe! His music has been featured in cult favourite TV shows like Riverdale, Suits, Greys Anatomy, and Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instrument, and his songs of vulnerability and resolve have been the soundtrack to countless stories of young love, but he’s as likely to be played on alternative and indie radio as he is a new mainstay on commercial radio.
Drawing inspiration from rock and roll gods like Oasis and Bruce Springsteen, Dean is humble about his success despite the fact that his sold out shows attract throngs of dedicated fans who line up for hours for a glimpse of the tall Aussie with the golden voice. If all that wasn’t enough, he now racked up more than a billion streams of his music online! You can catch Dean at Osheaga this summer – it’s one performance you won’t want to miss!!
Behind The Scenes
One of the brightest stars you’ll find shining in today’s musical constellation is an incredibly talented young Canadian singer with the midas touch, Lennon Stella.
No stranger to fame, the 19-year-old singer from Whitby, Ontario had a massive viral hit on YouTube, singing Robyn’s Call Your Girlfriend with her sister Maisy in 2012. That same year, the Stella sisters were cast on the hit TV show Nashville (which also happens to be the city where her family relocated a few years earlier), launching a successful career on-screen for both girls. (Speaking of TV, fans of GOT take note: Lennon’s music can now be found alongside SZA, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, and The Lumineers on the new Game of Thrones soundtrack, For The Throne).
Lennon, who grew up on a farm in rural Ontario, didn’t have access to Internet or TV as a child, but she did start playing guitar at age 5, and music has always remained central to her life (which is par for the course when your name is Lennon!!).
She and Maisy were raised in a musical family – their parents, MaryLynne and Brad were a country music duo known under the name The Stellas, and Lennon’s grandfather, Ray Penhale, toured with 50’s vocal group The Platters!! So it’s no surprise that the music bug has bitten Lennon in a big way!
Stylistically speaking, her sound is hard to define – she is as comfortable playing the Grand Ole Opry as she is performing at indie pop showcases, but good luck catching her in a small club anytime soon, as she’s currently touring major venues in Europe and will be embarking on a major North American tour supporting The Chainsmokers and 5 Seconds of Summer this fall!! You can catch her at Osheaga this summer, though, and we’re sure it’s gonna be one of those legendary shows that transports the entire crowd to a higher ground!
Behind The Scenes
When Alec Benjamin first started performing his own makeshift concerts in the parking lots of venues where some of his favourites artists were performing, he couldn’t have imagined he’d end up headlining those same venues so early in his career! By now, the 25-year-old troubadour from Phoenix, AZ has already written a slew of hits like If We Had Each Other, Boy in the Bubble, Paper Clown, and the ubiquitous Let Me Down Slowly (featuring the unmistakable vocals of R&B star Alessia Cara), which have made him one of the most streamed new artists in the world… and he’s just getting started!
Citing a broad range of influences that range from Eminem to Paul Simon, Tears For Fears to Post Malone, Alec is a singer-songwriter in the truest sense of the term. He may wield an acoustic guitar or sit behind a piano when he composes his playful and introspective tunes, but he’s also got a penchant for lo-fi beats, boom boxes, and hip-hop production, making for a unique sound that is undeniably… Alec!
His DIY attitude is not just limited to his early parking lot concerts, either – it’s an approach that permeates all that he does – he’s already released multiple mix-tapes, including his newest release, the enormously popular, Narrated For You, which has generated massive buzz so far. He’s also been cited by some of his own heroes as an influence. John Mayer, whose rock star gaze stared out from a poster in Alec’s childhood room, tweeted about his love of Alec’s music, eventually joining him onstage at the El Rey in LA in May of 2019, and Billie Eilish covered his song Water Fountain on her own Instagram account, something that understandably blew Alec’s mind!!
Things really took off for Alec in 2017 when 12-year-old Merrick Hanna danced to Alec’s song I Built A Friend during his audition on America’s Got Talent. Since then, Alec’s been on a rocket trajectory that’s taken him on a headlining tour through Europe most recently and you can see him live in Montreal at Osheaga this summer! It’s one show you can’t miss!!!
